Riddle: Why are the certain letters above and below the line?

Answer: This one tricked more than 3 quarters of a college proffeser's class. I couldn't get it either. My grade 6 teacher got it though. The letters above the line have all straight lines. The letters below the line all have at least one curved line. W is on both sides because it can be either.
