The people of Ireland started observing the Roman Catholic feast day of St. Patrick around the turn of the 9th century.  This day became an official holiday, in Ireland, in 1903.  Don't forget to wear green and have a shamrock shake on March 17, to celebrate St. Paddy's Day.
